Recent soil temperature

Enter a ZIP code or share your location to see recent soil temperature.

Soil temperature at 6 cm (about 2.4 in). Weather data can be delayed or unavailable; it is one input, not a complete diagnosis.

Where the data comes from

Temperature is requested from Open-Meteo, a public weather API, for the coordinates behind your ZIP code or your shared location. The reading is modelled at 6 cm (about 2.4 in) below the surface. It is not a sensor buried in your lawn.

How to use it

Soil temperature is a useful signal for seed germination and pre-emergent timing, but it varies with sun, soil type, mulch, and moisture. A south-facing sandy slope can be several degrees warmer than a shaded low spot a few streets away. The 7-day average is often more useful than a single hour.

When data is unavailable

If the weather service cannot return a reading, the tool says so. It does not substitute a guess. Try a coordinate entry or come back later.
