How big is your lawn?

Get the area right before you buy seed, fertilizer, or water. Measure the lawn, subtract the hardscape, and use the number everywhere else.

Lawn area

4,000sq ft

Square yards

444sq yd

Acres

0.092ac

Square meters

372m²

Gross area

4,000sq ft

Measure twice. For irregular lawns, split the shape into rectangles or circles and add the areas.

How the area is calculated

Rectangle: length × width. Circle: π × radius². Triangle: ½ × base × height. Trapezoid: the average of the two parallel sides × the distance between them. The non-lawn deduction is subtracted from the gross area.

For an irregular lawn, split it into rectangles, circles, and triangles, calculate each one, and add the results. A phone measuring app can help with long distances, but check the result against a tape measure on at least one side.

Why the number matters

Almost every product rate is expressed per 1,000 sq ft. A lawn that is 20% larger than you think gets 20% more product than intended. That is both a cost problem and a label-compliance problem.
